What you should know before buying or repairing your computer.

Misinformation is the norm for most of the name-brand vendors and retailers. Ever made the mistake of using someone who didn't repair your computer right and maybe even lost your important data? Ever had a computer that started crashing and discovered that customer support was worthless? The major box makers such as HP/Compaq, Dell, Acer and Gateway/Emachines take shortcuts such as cheap motherboards with integrated sound and video and virtually no free resources, and towers with tiny power supplies that run on the ragged edge trying to run popular accessories such as USB accessories or video cards. Unless you like dealing with non-English-speaking idiots half a world away, it would make more sense to buy one that can be supported locally and upgraded easily with the best personal service available. And if you only intend to use your computer for internet cruising, writing letters or banking, you don't need to go nuts with the newest bleeding-edge quad processors or the newest Windows operating system, as some companies might want you to believe. For most people, a 6-year old upgraded computer can be just as fast as a brand-new system.

If you're moving up from an older system, you probably want your data and applications moved to the new system. All you get with a system from a retail vendor is a system set up the same way they do for everyone. It is up to you to figure out how to transfer your important information and settings to your new system. Beware of the "free data transfer" program that these retailers use, since only experts know where your special data hides and we will personally search your entire hard drive and capture these elusive files. EDS provides this service free with every new computer we sell. In addition, EDS can offer important safeguards such as auto-backup of documents and business data to a USB memory stick, and Full System Backup to a second hard drive, which can be lifesavers if you run a business and absolutely cannot afford to lose critical data because of a computer crash or virus attack. All of our systems come with a Backup Strategy already set up that the big box stores don't even offer. Even when Windows crashes to the point that it seems hopeless to everyone, even the Microsoft techs, you can usually restore your system yourself without loosing any data. Warranties are not the same. Ask these questions from your vendor:

Will your system be serviced in your home or business within 24 hours, or must you take it apart and bring everything to the store, or maybe even have to ship it back to the vendor? If your system crashes and you need technical assistance, must you call an 800 number somewhere in cow country or India and get put on hold, or can you talk directly with the person who built your unit? Does the vendor provide you with a backup solution to restore your system after a crash or are you on your own to pick up the pieces? After the usual one-year warranty, will your vendor tell you that you're SOL, or are replacement parts easily availiable? Major manufacturers like Dell, HP/Compaq and Gateway/E-Machines require that replacement parts must come from them, even though their quality may not be equivalent to the brand-name components that we choose. For example, Dell sends used, refurbished parts for your "new" computer! A replacement part from EDS will work in any industry-standard custom system made, but it might not fit in your HP or Gateway.
